Link Exchange – Web Traffic – Link Building
Ad Swaps: A Smart and Easy Way to Get Free Traffic
An advertisement swap or ad swap is simply an arrangement where you agree to put up someone else’s ad on your site or email newsletter in exchange for them doing the same.
The goal of an ad swap is mainly to get exposure for a specific purpose, such as selling products/services or improving awareness of your brand/site. This is different from a link exchange because you are not seeking to improve your search engine rank. The link value doesn’t matter at all. What matters is getting visitors into your web site.
For an ad swap to be successful and fair, there are four pre-requisites to be fulfilled:
- Equal traffic and exposure: Both parties ought to have websites that receive a steady amount of visitors everyday, or an email list with a decent amount of subscribers.
- Fair and Good Ad placement: Traffic flows more easily to you when your ad is displayed in a spot which is easily viewable and accessible by visitors.
- High Relevancy: In the best scenario, an ad swap should occur between websites in the same niche, as both parties would benefit from a trade in visitors with an already established interest on the same topic.
- No Conflicting Purpose. If you’re a merchant selling a product or a firm offering a service, you should not do ad swaps with competitors (other merchants/firms in the same niche).
Even though these pageview-trading rings are called traffic exchanges, they aren’t useful because you don’t get truly targeted and interested viewers, people who click through to your site because they were honestly compelled by curiosity or desire, not because they want more hits to their own website.
All ad swaps can be measured with tracking links and analytics so both parties can compare how many hits they received with the clicks they sent out.
Here are some ad swap formats you can use.
- On-site Banners and Text Links. This includes banners of all sizes and text links on a site-wide basis or on specific webpages. Includes blog post promos.
- Email Newsletters. Involves inserting a mention of your ad partner’s website or product/offer. This can be accompanied by a personal endorsement or not.
- RSS Feed Ads. These are either text links or image banners placed within an RSS feed.
How to Approach Potential Link Exchange Partners
First, you need to create a links page. This links page needs to look and feel the same as the rest of your site and should include instructions on how to link to your site and an example of the description you want. If you use buttons for links, make sure you include a text link somewhere so search engines can find your links page easily.
Now that you have your links page ready, it's time to start looking for link partners. When searching for link partners, start by searching for your keywords in Google and choose 10 to 20 sites that have content that is related to or can compliment your site. Then, add a text link with a brief description of thier site on your links page.
Now it's time to send off an email to each site and ask if they will exchange links with you. I have a basic form letter I use for this (form letter at end of article). However, I add something personal about their site, a compliment about something I liked. This lets them know that I'm not a bot sending spam, but a real person interested in exchanging links that has actually took the time to review their site.
Top Traffic Exchanges - Making Money with Traffic Exchanges
Top traffic exchanges have the following characteristics:
- Direct a Huge Volume of Traffic to the Website: The traffic exchange should increase the web traffic on our site. This is the most important consideration while choosing a traffic exchange.
- Allow Manual Surfing: Traffic exchanges can allow both manual and automatic surfing. Manual surfing, as the name suggests, refers to clicking a button for viewing websites and advertisements. The viewer is expected to stay on a website for a certain length of time.
- Offer Benefits: All top traffic exchanges offer great benefits to a subscriber (surfer). The subscriber is given free credits for signing up with the traffic exchange. A person gains credits on visiting a website, while he loses credit when people visit his website.
Share More and Get Profitable With Traffic Exchange
Traffic exchange works on the same principle as link exchange, except that here you are corresponding with other sites to gain traffic. The idea revolves around a simple concept – you share and receive traffic from other websites. Thus within the same network, visitors can check out information from your site as well as the site who is a part of the traffic exchange program with you.
One reason why traffic exchange has stood the test of time is because of the fact that it is free. Yes, today there are hordes of sites that are willing to exchange traffic with your site for absolutely no cost. Best of all you can achieve thousands of hits per day through such traffic exchange programs.
The good thing about traffic exchange programs is their ability to get you plenty of backlinks to your website. As your reciprocal sites gain in popularity, your site too gets more visibility and prominence online. This results in better search engine page rankings, as well as more clicks to your site. What’s more, you also get to place your site better in the free search engine listings.
The Importance of Backlinks
What are "backlinks"? Backlinks are links that are directed towards your website. Also knows as Inbound links (IBL's). The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website. Backlinks are important for SEO because some search engines, especially Google, will give more credit to websites that have a good number of quality backlinks, and consider those websites more relevant than others in their results pages for a search query.
A search engine considers the content of the sites to determine the QUALITY of a link. When inbound links to your site come from other sites, and those sites have content related to your site, these inbound links are considered more relevant to your site. If inbound links are found on sites with unrelated content, they are considered less relevant. The higher the relevance of inbound links, the greater their quality.
Building quality backlinks is extremely important to Search Engine Optimization, and because of their importance, it should be very high on your priority list in your SEO efforts. We hope you have a better understanding of why you need good quality inbound links to your site, and have a handle on a few helpful tools to gain those links.
How to Identify Bad Link Exchange Transactions
- Quality of content: I try to make sure that my links come from pages with original content that are not sourced from an affiliate program or duplicated hundreds of times on the Internet.
- The links page: Check what the links pages are like. Definitely avoid links pages that have over 50 links, or use dynamic URLs, or are not ind exed by search engines.
- The links page should be too far from the home page: Search engine bots are unlikely to go more than three levels deep on any website. So links buried deeper may not be found. When looking for quality links look for websites that provide links as close to the home page as possible.
- The topic: Unless the links page of the site receives a large amount of traffic or that they have a high PageRank, stick to sites about the same topic as your own.
- The request email
- Quality of website: I look for glaring typos, English mistakes, excessive fla shy banners, broken images, or the ever infamous animated Under Construction gifs.
- Format of link: I usually look at the source code of the links page to make sure that I will be receiving honest inbound backlinks. Does the site use rel=nofollow or external redirects for their outbound links?
- Are they willing to put the link in a "real" page of their site? If they are willing to place your link on a content page, then they are definitely my valued link partner.
- If I see their phone number in the request email...Then I'd classify them as a valueable link partner.
