Alexa rank, Google PageRank, Link Popularity

What is Alexa Rank ?

Alexa’s definition of the Alexa Traffic Rank:
The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis.
The main Alexa traffic rank is based on the geometric mean of these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users)

A web toolbar service that provides webmasters with real-time Alexa site traffic data. Online: Alexa Toolbar ( industriebooks.com )

Put simply, the Alexa Rank is a ranking system which bases its ranking schema on the level of traffic each website receives from the number of people who visit a website with the Alexa toolbar installed.( doshdosh.com )

Alexa ranks sites based on tracking information of users of its Alexa Toolbar for Internet Explorer and from integrated sidebars in Mozilla and Netscape.( wikipedia.org )

The Alexa Rank is different to Google PR; Alexa rank websites based solely on traffic to the website. Alexa rank websites in descending order towards 0, where the most highly visited website on the Internet is given a rank of 0. At this point in time the top three ranked websites (most visitors) on Alexa are, 0 - Yahoo, 1 - Google and 2 - MySpace ( kangainternet.com.au )

What is Google PageRank ?

A high Pagerank is defined by the amount, importance(PageRank) and relevance of web pages that link to the web page in question.(kangainternet.com.au)

PageRank is a link analysis algorithm, named after Larry Page, used by the Google Internet search engine that assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. The algorithm may be applied to any collection of entities with reciprocal quotations and references. The numerical weight that it assigns to any given element E is also called the PageRank of E and denoted by PR(E). ( wikipedia.org )

PageRank (PR) is Google's method of calculating a web page's relevance and importance through the quality of sites linking to it. The precise details of the algorithm are kept secret and Google continues to "enhance" its performance. It is seen as an important indicator as to the popularity of a site and thus its value to potential advertisers. It can become a bit of a holy grail with developers concentrating more on PR than getting the traffic they need. Small businesses in particular should concentrate on getting customers first. If successful Page Rank will follow. ( leapinghare.co.uk )

A system which ranks pages within the Google search engine and determines the importance of the web page, based on a scale of 1 to 10. Higher page rank usually means higher placement on the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP) within relevant searches. Note: the "Page" in PageRank is actually Larry Page, co-founder of Google and author of the original PageRank algorithm. ( losangeles-lawyer-marketing.com )

The PageRank of a website is represented by a number from one to ten. The higher the number, the more important the website is.( siteground.com )

Go to Google.com and type a topic in to the search engine box. Now look at the number of pages that are displayed for that one topic. Did you ever wonder how certain web sites are higher than others or how they even get ranked onto the site? ( seo-webhosting.org )

What is Link Popularity ?

Link popularity is a measure of the quantity and quality of other web sites that link to a specific site on the World Wide Web. It is an example of the move by search engines towards off-the-page-criteria to determine quality content. In theory, off-the-page-criteria adds the aspect of impartiality to search engine rankings. Link popularity plays an important role in the visibility of a web site among the top of the search results. Indeed, some search engines require at least one or more links coming to a web site, otherwise they will drop it from their index. ( wikipedia )

A raw count of how "popular" a page is based on the number of backlinks/inbound links it has. It does not factor in link context or link quality, which are also important elements in how search engines make use of links to impact rankings. ( formicmedia )

Link popularity is process in which links from other websites are earned in order to improve the importance of that website on the internet. ( searchengine-optimization-guru )
